J.-C.&nbsp;; le quadrant \u00e0 fil \u00e0 plomb, quant \u00e0 lui, semble appara\u00eetre au IXe si\u00e8cle dans le monde arabe, peut-\u00eatre sous la plume d\u2019Al-Khwarizmi (v. 783-v. 850).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quand ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La premi\u00e8re mention du quadrant astronomique remonte \u00e0 l\u2019Almageste&nbsp;de&nbsp;Ptol\u00e9m\u00e9e (v. 90-v. 168), celle du quadrant \u00e0 fil \u00e0 plomb peut-\u00eatre au IXe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00c9volution&nbsp;:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le quadrant a fil \u00e0 plomb, qui servait \u00e0 conna\u00eetre l\u2019heure, est utilis\u00e9 en Europe depuis le XIIIe si\u00e8cle. L\u2019une des mentions les plus anciennes provient de l\u2019\u0153uvre de&nbsp;Jean de Sacrobosco.<br>D\u2019autres types de quadrants se sont ensuite d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s (le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent restant cependant en usage). A peu pr\u00e8s au m\u00eame moment, appara\u00eet le quadrant astrolabe, sorte d\u2019astrolabe pli\u00e9e en quatre. L\u2019un des premiers \u00e0 le mentionner, en Occident, est Profatius, astronome juif actif \u00e0 Montpellier au XIIIe si\u00e8cle, mais l\u2019instrument est sans doute d\u2019origine arabe. Une \u00e9volution du quadrant astrolabe, le quartier de Gunter, cr\u00e9\u00e9 par&nbsp;Edmund Gunter (1581-1626)&nbsp;en 1623, s\u2019av\u00e8re particuli\u00e8rement utile aux navigateurs.<br>En navigation encore, il faut citer d\u2019autres \u00e9volutions du quadrant&nbsp;: le quadrant de&nbsp;John Hadley (1682-1744)&nbsp;bas\u00e9 sur une invention de Newton et dat\u00e9e de 1731. Puis le sextant (60\u00b0) cr\u00e9\u00e9 par&nbsp;John Campbell (v. 1720-1790)&nbsp;au milieu du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pour quoi ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le quadrant est un des plus anciens instruments d\u2019astronomie et de navigation c\u00e9leste. Il permet de mesurer la hauteur du soleil et des astres, et de d\u00e9terminer l\u2019heure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comment ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Il existe diff\u00e9rents types de quadrant&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>le quadrant mural<\/strong>&nbsp;: ce quadrant est fixe et \u00e9tait utilis\u00e9 pour mesurer la hauteur des astres. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Le&nbsp;<strong>quadrant g\u00e9om\u00e9trique<\/strong>&nbsp;: ce quadrant \u00e9tait utilis\u00e9 dans la navigation et permettait de conna\u00eetre la&nbsp;latitude&nbsp;du navire en mesurant la hauteur du soleil ou d\u2019une \u00e9toile. Il \u00e9tait agr\u00e9ment\u00e9 d\u2019un fil \u00e0 plomb et d\u2019une perle coulissant le long de celui-ci ce qui permettait \u00e9galement de d\u00e9terminer l\u2019heure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Le&nbsp;<strong>quadrant de Davis<\/strong>&nbsp;: ce quadrant permettait de mesurer la&nbsp;latitude&nbsp;gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la hauteur du soleil mais en visant celui-ci de dos. L\u2019observateur regarde l\u2019horizon \u00e0 travers une ligne de vis\u00e9e (C) et observe la plaque (B) en m\u00eame temps. L\u2019observateur visait l\u2019horizon gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une petite lunette en O. Gr\u00e2ce au miroir de l\u2019horizon et au miroir pivotant, l\u2019objet observ\u00e9 et l\u2019horizon se superposaient. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lorsqu\u2019on r\u00e9alise une rotation d\u2019un angle donn\u00e9 du miroir pivotant, l\u2019image tourne du double ce qui explique la graduation de 90\u00b0. Son usage \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s simple.
