George Sarton, né à Gand en 1884 et décédé à Cambridge en 1956, fut, sinon l’inventeur, au moins un ardent promoteur de l’histoire de la science, à qui l’on doit que cette branche du savoir est devenue une discipline indépendante et féconde. Fondateur des revues Isis et Osiris, auteur d’une monumentale Introduction to the History of Science, de plusieurs autres ouvrages et de très nombreux articles, George Sarton fut en tout cas le plus important historien de la science de la première moitié du XXème siècle.

En 1984, Technologia réservera une de ses livraisons pour célébrer le centenaire de la naissance de George Sarton, en publiant des textes consacrés à la vie ou à l’œuvre du grand savant belge.

Les chercheurs désireux de participer à ce numéro spécial sont priés d’en aviser la direction de Technologia le plus rapidement possible.

George Sarton, geboren te Gent in 1884 en overleden te Cambridge in Massachusetts in 1956, was de voornaamste pionier van de geschiedenis der wetenschappen. Het is dank zij hem dat deze specialiteit een zelfstandige en druk beoefende discipline geworden is. Hij heeft de tijdschriften Isis en Osiris opgericht, en een monumentale Introduction to the History of Science geschreven, naast verschillende andere werken en talrijke artikels. Hij mag beschouwd worden als de voornaamste historicus der wetenschappen van de eerste helft der 20e eeuw.

Technologia zal in een aflevering van de jaargang 1984 het eeuwfeest van de geboorte van George Sarton herdenken, door teksten op te nemen over leven of werk van deze grote Belgische geleerde.

Navorsers die bereid zijn aan dit speciaal nummer mee te werken worden verzocht zich zo snel mogelijk met de redaktie van Technologia in verbinding te stellen.

George Sarton’s Centennial

George Sarton was born in Gent in 1884 and died in Cambridge, Mass. in 1956. He was, if not the creator, the ardant promoter of the History of Science. We owe to him that this branch of knowledge became an independant and productive discipline.

Founder of the reviews Isis and Osiris, author of the monumental Introduction to the History of Science, of many works and a great number of articles, Georges Sarton was certainly the most important historian of science in the first half of the twentieth century.

In 1984, Technologia will devote an issue to the commemoration of George Sarton’s Centennial by publishing texts related to the life and work of the great Belgian scholar.
